Through his humanitarian efforts, his namesake came to be recognized as the standard for “extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field” in the form of the Roberto Clemente Award, given annually by Major League Baseball.
Lou Gehrig was known for his mastery as a hitter and for his durability, which earned him his nickname “The Iron Horse”. On July 4th, 1939 Lou Gehrig gave his famous “The luckiest man on the face of the earth” speech to a sold out crowd in Yankee Stadium. Shortly after he was inducted into the Hall Of Fame.
